This Week - 2nd February
Friday 22nd May (it's a bit late I know - took longer than I expected...)
Ronde
- Work slowly and practice it bit by bit.
- Learn the rhythms first.
- Practice the tricky bits
- Follow the tutorial video. Keep pausing to practice, don't try to do it all at once!
- Can you play it all the way through without the letters?
- When you can play it slowly and neatly, start speeding up!
- Record yourself in BandLab - more information here.

Recorders
A few people still haven't brought their letters back yet!
You can take your recorder home to practice when you do.
In the lessons so far, we've learnt the notes G A B C high D and low D.
We've been playing these tunes:
'Cups of Tea', 'Merrily' ,'Walking the Dog', 'Another Rainy Day' ,
'Toad in a Hat' and 'Now the Day is Over'
Some of you have started learning 'London's Burning' (click here)
When you can play it, the next tune is 'Funky Freda' (click here)
Samba & Singing
Last term we worked on the agogo/cowbell rhythm (click here)
and the '8s break' (click here)
We also sang Furrem Be Meheen/Mary Mac (click here)
Scroll down or use the menu on the left for more Samba and Songs.
Here's a new tamborim rhythm to learn:
1st part
'I don't like cabbage'

2nd part
'I don't like cabbage, I like potatoes'

The underlined syllables (don't, ca and like) are on the main beats: 1 2 1 2
All the other syllables are in between the main beats.
It's time to put all the ideas we've been working on together to make a complete Samba Piece.
We're going to have 5 parts or 'sections'. This is how it's going to work:
- Section 1: Spider Mouse Break.
- Section 2: Main rhythm - surdos start; tamborims join in; agogos join in next.
- Section 3: 8s Break.
- Section 4: Main rhythm - all start together.
- Section 5: Spider Mouse Break.
Watch the video first, then see if you can join in on one of your DIY instruments - 'surdo', 'tamborim' or 'agogo'. Then try another one.
Did you learn the Eights Break? If you didn't, have a go now! (click here)

We're going to learn an extra bit for the tamborim.
I'm going to use my measuring jug and a wooden spoon.
How about you? If you can't find anything, just clap it or tap your knee.
Watch the videos:

This is another samba break. We call it the 'Eights Break':

The idea is to count in your head while clapping or playing just on the 1 s
One two three four five six seven eight
One two three four five six seven eight
One two three four One two three four
One two One two One One One One
1. Just say it to start with, like this:
2. Say it again and clap on all the Ones like this:
3. Clap again, but don't count aloud, just count in your head:
4. Play it on a DIY instrument (eg frying pan!):
Can you play it in time without even counting in your head?
Here's another way to think about it:

And another song to learn...
Find a DIY agogo. Nothing breakable or too valuable! Then try this:
Here's another song we learnt last year.
Can you work out what's happening? Pick a part and sing along
The 'Spider Mouse' samba break.
Say it
Clap it
Try being the leader too!
Can you teach it to someone else in your family?
You probably haven't got any Samba kit at home!
Here's an idea from Tom for making your own.
Turn your family into a Samba Band!
I'm going to have a go myself. I'll let you know how I got on next week!
Singing
Here are two songs we started singing last year.
'Furrem be me heen' and 'Mary Mac'
Choose which singer you want to sing along with!
Lots more songs to listen to and learn here
Things we did last term
Here are some of the things we were doing in the lessons last term.
Please have a look and see how much you can remember.
We'll be coming back to them over the next few weeks
